PlayStation 5 sales in the United States have overtaken those of PS4 on a time-aligned basis.

That’s according to Mat Piscatella, executive director and video game industry analyst at Circana (formerlyNPD Group).

In the company’s latest monthly sales report, which was published on Wednesday, Piscatella noted thatPS5unit sales are now tracking ahead ofPS4’s after the first 29 months on the market for both consoles.

Boosted byincreased stockandrecent price promotions, PS5 is the best-selling console in units and dollars for both March and 2023 year-to-date.

Last month, Circana reported that PS5 sales had reacheda record high for any PlayStation systemin the month of February. And according toPiscatella, PS5 also set a new March individualPlayStationplatform unit record.

Sonyrecently said it expects PS5 tosmash PS4’s global sales record for the first three months of a calendar year.

Circana also said today that Resident Evil 4 was the best-selling game in March, and it is now the third highest-selling game of the year behindModern Warfare2 and frontrunnerHogwarts Legacy.

The other new entries on the top 20 monthly software sales chart were MLB: The Show 23 at No.3 andWWE 2K23at No.7.

Total US consumer spending on game hardware, content and accessories in March was down 5% year-over-year to $4.6 billion.

Year-to-date consumer spending is down 1% compared to the same period in 2022, to $13.6 billion.
