The Game Awards creator Geoff Keighley has said that the upcoming show will be “significantly shorter,” than last year’s show, due to feedback from viewers.
The Game Awards2022 will take place onThursday, December 8, and ahead of the event, Keighley hosted one of his regular Twitter spaces audio streams wherein he revealed some details about the upcoming show.
“One thing we’re doing this year is we’re trying to make the show a little bit shorter,” Keighley said. “I won’t say anything officially until we’re through our rehearsals, but we think it’s going to be a significantly shorter show this year.”
Explaining the decision to shorten the runtime, Keighley said: “We think there’s been a little bit of fatigue about how long the show has been, there are lots of games and lots of things that want to be a part of it, but we’re cutting back on those things to hopefully have a bit more of a streamlined show.”
Keighley also claimed that there will be fewer big games as part of the show. “We definitely have cut back pretty significantly in terms of the runtime on the show and just you know kind of fewer games, fewer bigger games that’ll be in there.”
This comes a day afterKeighley said that he “[hasn’t] felt this good about a show in a while,”during a Reddit AMA. He also claimed that the show would feature “30-40” games showing new content and “a fair number” of new game announcements.
The Game Awards 2021 saw the announcement of theWonder Womangame,Quantic Dream‘sStar Wars Eclipse, andAlan Wake 2. The show closed with a trailer forElden Ring.
The preshow hosted 13 game reveals or new trailers for games, while the main show had 43. This year’s event will feature a pre-show re-branded as the “Opening Act”, Keighley said, which it’s claimed will feature some “huge announcements”.
2021’s show ran for around three hours and featured a 45-minute pre-show.
Keighley’s last show,Summer Game Fest, closed with the official reveal ofThe Last of Us Part 1, a remake of the 2013Naughty Dogclassic. This surprise was spoiled some hours before, however, as it appeared onPlayStation‘s own PlayStation Direct website.
One title that won’t be at the show is the new game fromMortal KombatdeveloperNetherRealm, whichtold its fanson Friday not to expect news from the Los Angeles event.
Tekken 8has been confirmedto feature at the show, however, and the long-rumouredCrash Bandicoot Wumpa Leaguecould also be announced, according to media packages sent to press and influencers.
