The first gameplay trailer for South of Midnight has been released.
The game, which is developed by We Happy Few studioCompulsion Games,was first revealed last yearwith a cinematic trailer.
This is the first time gameplay has been shown, however.
“We meet Hazel and her newly-revealed companion, Catfish, as they travel through a flooded area inspired by the Mississippi Delta – and quickly find themselves facing down one of the game’s monster Kings,”Xbox‘s description reads.
“Meet Two-Toed Tom, a gigantic albino alligator with a powerful hunger, and even his own theme song.”
In an interview on the officialXbox Wire blog, the game’s creative directorDavid Searsexplained that the game’s main theme is about repairing a newly darkened world and helping the people trapped in it.
“From top to bottom, that’s the message behind Hazel, her combat design, her powers,” Sears said. “Everything is a Weaving metaphor – Weavers are supposed to put things right, do good in the world.
“She’s literally repairing the tapestry, and with creatures – Haints included – we spent a good amount of time making sure it was clear that when you’re attacking or interacting, you’re doing it in a non-lethal but aggressive way.
“You’re doing it because you’re helping – removing the weight of all this trauma.”
South of Midnightis set for release next year onXbox Series X/SandPC, and will be available on Game Pass on day one.
