The first details about Sony’s upcoming Twisted Metal TV series have been revealed.
According toVariety, the live-action adaptation ofPlayStation’s vehicular combat series will be an action comedy executive produced by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the writers of the Deadpool films and Zombieland.
Michael Jonathan Smith, who wrote for and produced Cobra Kai, will write and also executive produce the show.
It will focus on an outsider tasked with delivering a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland roamed by bandits in deadly vehicles, including the series’ trademark character, Sweet Tooth, a psychotic clown who drives a modified ice cream truck.
It was firstreported in 2019that Sony intended to develop a TV series based on Twisted Metal, which debuted on the original PlayStation in 1995, with the most recent series entry released forPS3in 2012.
“’Twisted Metal’ is one of the most beloved franchises from PlayStation,” said Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions. “We are thrilled to have such a great team working on bringing this iconic game to life for the fans.”
Twisted Metal is the second confirmed TV series from PlayStation Productions, a studio formed bySony Interactive Entertainmenttoadapt its original game properties for film and TV.
The first TV series revealed to be in development was HBO’s The Last of Us, which will star Game of Thrones actorsPedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as Joel and Ellie.
It will cover the events of the original The Last of Us, which was released in 2013, and may include content based onThe Last of Us Part 2, which launched in 2020.
Sony is reportedly developingthree movies and seven TV showsbased on PlayStation games, including anUnchartedfilm starring Tom Holland, which was recentlydelayed to February 2022.
