The app, titledSonyPictures Core, will let users buy or rent up to 2000 new and classic Sony Pictures movie, with example titles includingSpider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Spider-Man: No Way Home,Uncharted, The Equalizer, No Hard Feelings, Bullet Train, and Ghostbusters: Afterlife.
However, Sony also saysPlayStationPlus members on the Premium or Deluxe tiers will also get access to “a curated catalogue of up to 100 movies” to stream on demand.
These movies will contain no ads and the line-up will be “updated periodically”.
Movies available during the initial line-up include Looper, Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV, Elysium, andResident EvilDamnation.
The app will also have an exclusivity period where some Sony Pictures movies will be available to purchase first. The first of these in some markets, such as the UK, France, Germany and Japan, will be theGran Turismomovie, which currently isn’t available to purchase or rental in those regions.
Gran Turismo is already available for purchase on rental in various streaming sites in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and so has been added to Sony Pictures Core today as part of the app’s release.
“This is just the beginning,” Sony says, “and we plan to evolve the offerings and benefits of Sony Pictures Core over time – including a selection of hit anime content from Crunchyroll.”
