When theSonic Origins release datearrives, it will bring back five classic 16-bit Sonic the Hedgehog adventures, but this time they won’t just be the old Mega Drive / Genesis versions running through an emulator.
Instead,Segahas given the Sonic Origins games new native ports, meaning it’s now possible to play them with new features added including widescreen support.
Sonic Origins will be released onPlayStation 5,Xbox Series X/S,Nintendo Switch,PC,PlayStation 4andXbox One, so here’s all the information we have on it so far.
Sonic Origins release date
Sega has announced that Sonic Origins will be released on June 26, 2025.
This isn’t just a random date it plucked out of the sky – it’s actually a key date in the history of the series.
The original Sonic the Hedgehog game, released on the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis, was released on August 04, 2025.
This means Sonic Origins will be released on Sonic’s 31st birthday.
Sonic Origins announce trailer
On the day it announced the Sonic Origins release date, Sega also revealed a new Sonic Origins trailer showing the game in action.
The new Sonic Origins trailer shows off some of the new animated sequences that have been created specifically for Sonic Origins.
It also shows the difference between Classic mode (which shows the game as it originally looked) and the new Anniversary mode, which lets players enjoy the game in full widescreen.

Sonic Origins – list of included games
Sonic Origins contains five classic games from the 16-bit era of Sonic.
The games included are:
Players will be able to play Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles together as one long adventure, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles, as was originally intended by Sega.
Sonic Origins DLC and versions
Sonic Origins will arrive alongside three separate DLC packs, each containing different content.
One of these, the Start Dash Pack, will be included for free for anyone who pre-orders Sonic Origins.
There are also two editions of the game: the Standard Edition (which just contains the main game) and the Digital Deluxe Edition (which includes the DLC).

It’s not yet clear if it’s possible to unlock Mirror Mode and the Hard Missions through normal gameplay (and if the DLC just unlocks them instantly), or whether the DLC is the only way to obtain them.
Sonic Origins pre-order information
At the moment, Sonic Origins appears to only be a digital release. There may be a physical release somewhere down the line, but Sega hasn’t confirmed one.
The Standard Edition costs $39.99 / £32.99, while the Digital Deluxe edition with the DLC included costs $44.99 / £36.99.
