Rockstar Games has published its first major post-release update for GTA Trilogy: Definitive Edition, admitting that the much-criticised remasters “did not launch in a state that meets our own standards of quality”.
The remaster collection was released last week witha significant number of technical issues, as well as “unintended” documents within its game files such asunlicensed music and developer notes. Rockstar temporarilypulled the game from its PC storeand the console versions currently havethe worst Metacritic user score ever.

On Friday, Rockstar published a statement apologising to fans for the state of the release game and promised a series of updates, the first of which is out now and fixes over 50 issues(see the patch notes at the bottom of this story).
It also said it would be adding the original versions of GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas back to itsPCstore and giving them away for free to Definitive Edition owners.

“Firstly, we want to sincerely apologize to everyone who has encountered issues playing these games,” the company said.
“The Grand Theft Auto series — and the games that make up this iconic trilogy — are as special to us as we know they are to fans around the world. The updated versions of these classic games did not launch in a state that meets our own standards of quality, or the standards our fans have come to expect.”

It added: “We have ongoing plans to address the technical issues and to improve each game going forward. With each planned update, the games will reach the level of quality that they deserve to be.
“In the meantime, it pains us to mention that we are hearing reports of members of the development teams being harassed on social media. We would kindly ask our community to please maintain a respectful and civil discourse around this release as we work through these issues.”

Everyone who has purchasedGrand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Editionfor PC from the Rockstar Store through July 16, 2025, will receive the classic versions in theirRockstar GamesLauncher library at no additional cost, the company said.
“Once again, we’d like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding while we work through these updates to ensure these games meet everyone’s justifiably high standards.”
