Capcom says Resident Evil 2 (2019) sales surpassed five million units as of December 4, meaning the remake has now outsold the original 1998 release’s 4.96 million.
According toCapcom, cumulative sales of the games in the series total 94 million units since the first title debuted in 1996.
TheResident Evil2 remake was namedVGC’S 2019 Game of the Year.
On TuesdayCapcom announced its latest remake, Resident Evil 3, which has been recreated inside its RE Engine and will release in April 2020.
Originally released forPlayStationin 1999,Resident Evil 3follows Jill Valentine as she attempts to escape Raccoon city in the immediate aftermath of the virus outbreak, before the events of Resident Evil 2.
Capcom also confirmed that RE3 will include the full version ofResident Evil Resistance, themultiplayer spin-offwhich went into closed beta in October.
Developed by Capcom in partnership with Devil May Cry HD Collection studio NeoBards, Project Resistance is described as an asymmetric online five-person multiplayer game combining cooperative and competitive dynamics.
Resident Evil 2 is being partly developed byM-Two Inc, a new studio backed by Capcom, VGC sources claim.
M-Two has been in operation for over a year and is comprised of several former Platinum and Capcom employees, including formerPlatinumGamesCEOTatsuya Minami.
