Blizzard has introduced cross-play support for Overwatch.

The new feature enables friends to play with each other acrossPC,Xbox,PlayStationandNintendo Switch.

Console players will need to create and link a Battle.net account to participate in cross-play.

“By default, a party of console players will play with other console players,”game director Aaron Keller explainedin a cross-play video published earlier this month. “A party of PC players will play with PC players, as well as groups that consist of both PC and console players.

“Please note, this does not include Competitive Play,” Keller added. “For Competitive Play specifically, you will not be able to play as a party consisting of both PC and console players together. They will each have their own separate matchmaking pools.”

Blizzardhas confirmed additional details about the feature in across-play FAQ.

To celebrate the launch of cross-play, Blizzard said everyone who logs in toOverwatchby the end of 2021 will receive a Golden loot box.

Keller took on the role ofOverwatch 2game director in April following Blizzard vice presidentJeff Kaplan’s departure from the studio after 19 years.

He confirmed earlier this month that cross-progression would not launch alongside cross-play, although he said support is planned at a later date.

“We understand that this feature is important for some of you and it’s something that the Overwatch team is excited to work on in the future.” Keller said.
