A report from Japanese business publication Nikkei suggests that a more powerful Nintendo Switch console is still in the experimental stages of development, while a budget version of the system is being readied for release this fall.
The report, which was translated byUSgamer, backs upprevious claimsthat two newSwitchmodels are in development, one offering enhanced features targeted at avid gamers, and a less expensive, more portable alternative aimed at younger players.
But contrary toother claims, Nikkei’s sources say the cheaper Switch will retain the existing model’s docking feature, which enables users to connect the console to an external display.
The article also suggests that the more powerful Switch hardware is still in the early stages of development.
“Beyond the smaller, budget-focused model lies the development of the overhauled next-generation model intended to replace the one currently available,” reads the translation.
“Nintendois believed to be experimenting on a number of different things for the device, including usability, improved image rendering, and changes to the operating system, among other things,” it adds.
“One development source contends, however, that it still remains unclear at this stage who at the company will end up taking the lead on conceptual development for the new console.”
Nintendo rolled out the latestSwitch system updateearlier this week. It introduced the ability to transfer save data for individual games from one console to another, which would be a particularly useful feature should the company release new Switch models.
If reports of a budget Switch console set to launch this year are accurate, we may receive official confirmation from Nintendo at E3 in June.
