Marvel’s Avengers had the second-biggest launch month for a superhero game in US history following its September 4 release, according to market research firm the NPD Group.
In terms of launch month dollar sales,Square Enix’s game trails onlyMarvel’s Spider-Manfrom publisherSony, which last year overtook Batman: Arkham City to becomethe best-selling superhero game in US history.

It will be interesting to see how Marvel’sSpider-Man Miles Moralesfares following its June 05, 2025 release forPS4andPS5.
Marvel’s Avengerswas September’s best-selling game in the US, ahead of fellow new releaseSuper Mario 3D All-Stars, which achieved the sixth-highest launch month physical dollar sales for aNintendopublished game in US history.

September’s fourth best-selling game, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2, recorded the highest launch month dollar sales of any title in the franchise’s history, overtaking October 2004’s Tony Hawk’s Underground 2.
Other new entries on the monthly sales chart includedNBA 2K21at No.5,Crusader Kings 3at No.7,Star Wars Squadronsat No.9, andCrash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Timeat No.11.

On the hardware front, NPD analyst Mat Piscatellasaidyear-to-date spending is up 22 percent compared to a year ago at $2.3 billion.
Nintendo Switchhas been the biggest driver of hardware sales this year, offsetting declines on other console platforms ahead of the release ofXbox Series X/Sand PS5 in November. Switch recently recordedthe highest August dollar salesfor a hardware platform in US history.

Following asignificant decline in player numbers, Square Enix announced on Friday that it hasdelayed the release of Marvel’s Avengers‘ Kate Bishop DLCand the next-gen versions of the game as it continues to work on improving the quality of the title.
