Respawn has made the next-gen console versions of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order available in a surprise release.

ThePlayStation 5andXbox Series X|Sversions of the action adventure game are available as a free upgrade to owners of the last-gen game, publisherEAannounced on Friday. The next-gen version is also available both physically and digitally today for $40.

The next-gen version includes higher resolution textures and assets, 4K/HDR resolution, improved 60 FPS performance and significantly faster loading times, EA said.

Two graphics modes are available; Performance Mode On (1440p resolution at 60 FPS) and Performance Mode Off (4K resolution at 30 FPS), which marks an improvement on the modes added via anext-gen backwards compatibility optimisation updatein January.

There is no graphical setting onXboxSeries S, as performance is locked at 1080p/60FPS.

On Xbox Series X|S, the upgraded version of the game will import cloud saves from the last-gen game automatically, EA said, whereas PS5 owners will need to ensure their save is on the PS5 console (via transfer or cloud storage) and manually import it via a start-up menu.

Significantly, EA is also offering an upgrade path for owners of the last-gen disc versions who own a discless next-gen console. The publisher has openeda submission formand will provide digital games to those who can prove their purchase of the disc version.

EA said in July 2020 that Jedi Fallen Order game had surpassed 10 million unique players.

EA has previously labelled Fallen Order “one of the breakout titles of the last several years” and CEOAndrew Wilsoncalled it “the first title in an entirely new franchise”, suggesting aStar Wars Jedi: Fallen Order sequelis on the cards.

Respawn, which is also behind theTitanfallandApex Legendsseries, recentlyconfirmed it is working on an original game project.
