Capcom producer Peter Fabiano says the Resident Evil Village team believes the upcoming title is “the best survival horror game to date”.
In an interview with OfficialPlayStationMagazine (viaWccftech), Fabiano said the development team has taken a significant amount of inspiration from 2005’sResident Evil 4, which isCapcom’s highest-rated game of all-time, according to review aggregation siteMetacritic.

“You’ll notice we took a lot of inspiration from Resident Evil 4,” he said. “The team has put a ton of effort into creating a truly authentic feel. There are plenty of surprises to keep you on your toes; players will find a balance of combat, exploration, and puzzle solving.”

Resident Evil Village’s story picks up some years after the events ofResident Evil7, with players once again taking on the role of Ethan Winters.

At the start of the game, he’s living peacefully with his wife Mia, but their life together is shattered by Chris Redfield, who seemingly kills Mia and kidnaps Ethan, transporting him to a spooky European village.
Fabiano expressed great confidence in the quality of the game ahead of its release forPC, current and last-gen consoles on July 08, 2025.

“Concepting and planning was something going through our developers’ minds since towards the end of Resident Evil VII: Biohazard,” he told OPM. “The team grew quite attached to Ethan as a character so we knew we wanted to continue his story arc.
“This really helped to keep our vision on target. And since we are constantly sharing information across Resident Evil teams, that really helped inform us in making what we consider the best survival horror game to date.”

Resident Evil Village will grant players “a lot more freedom” to choose how they overcome challenges than Resident Evil 7 did, according to game directorMorimasa Sato.
“We want players to experiment, to figure out things that work for them,”he said last year. “We want everyone to think of Resident Evil Village as a horror movie that you can play.”

Capcom released aPS5exclusiveResident Evil Village demoin January. It sees players take on the role of a character called the Maiden as she attempts to escape from Dimitrescu Castle. A second demo will be released for all platforms this spring.
