Square Enix has announced five new Dragon Quest games, including the twelfth main game in the series.
The games were announced during a special Dragon Quest 35th Anniversary livestream last night, during which Dragon Quest designer Yuji Horii revealed the projectsSquare Enixwas working on.
The announcements included the first details of Dragon Quest XII, including its full title of Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate.
Although Horii didn’t give much information on the game, he did say that the game’s turn-based battle system will see some changes, that the game will be darker in tone and it will have a simultaneous worldwide release.
The presentation also revealed that Dragon Quest III is being remade. The 1988 NES title was remade for the Super Famicom and Game Boy Color in the ’90s, but this time it will be presented in a ‘2D-HD’ style, similar to Square Enix’sOctopath Traveler.
The Dragon Quest III 2D-HD remake will also be given a worldwide release, as will Dragon Quest Treasures, a new spin-off RPG that will focus on treasure hunting.
A new mobile puzzle game was also shown off, titled Dragon Quest Keshikeshi (which translates to Dragon Quest Erase-Erase). It’s a match-three puzzler and is only confirmed for Japan at the moment.
Fans of the Japan-only Dragon Quest X were also shown the game’s new expansion, as well as Dragon Quest X Offline, a new version that is played from a top-down perspective and doesn’t need an online connection.
Dragon Quest games have sold over 82 million units worldwide since the first title released in 1986, according to Square Enix.
The last mainline entry in the series was Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age, which originally released for 3DS andPS4in Japan in 2017 before making its way west and to other platforms.
More recently, Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age Definitive Editionreleased for Switch in 2019, and forPC,Xbox OneandXboxGame Passin December 2020, marking the franchise’s first appearance on aMicrosoftconsole.
Horiihad previously confirmedin January 2020 that the next mainline entry in the series, Dragon Quest XII, had entered production in 2019.
