Todd Howard has reiterated that Fallout 5 is behind Starfield and Elder Scrolls 6 in the production queue at Bethesda Game Studios.

Speaking as part of a broad interview withIGN, the game director provided an update on the studio’s plans once its sci-fi RPG releases next year.

Fallout 5 won’t arrive before Starfield or Elder Scrolls 6, Todd Howard reiterates

“Yes,Elder Scrolls 6is in pre-production and, you know, we’re going to be doing Fallout 5 after that, so our slate’s pretty full going forward for a while,” he said. “We have some other projects that we look at from time to time as well.”

Howard previously claimed work onStarfieldbegan in 2015, meaning it will have been in development for over 7 years by the time it releases. Presuming development on its next games takes as long, Fallout fans could well have to wait another decade for the next instalment.

Starfield’s main story is about 30-40 hours long, says Todd Howard

Howard acknowledged the lengthy production schedules in the IGN interview, stating: “They do take a while, I wish they came out faster, I really do, we’re trying as hard as we can, but we want them to be as best as they can be for everybody.”

The director previously told the same site in 2021 thathe would be hesitant to outsource Fallout 5.

“I don’t see… Look, Fallout’s really part of our DNA here,” he responded, seemingly playing down the chances of another studio taking the reins, before not ruling it out completely.

“We’ve worked with other people from time to time, I can’t say what’s going to happen,” he continued. “You know, we have a one-pager on Fallout 5, what we want to do.”
