The upcoming remaster of Diablo 2 will support game saves from the original version, the game’s producer has confirmed.
Matthew Cederquist toldIGN Middle Eastthat despite Diablo 2 being more than two decades old, anyone who still has a save file from the original game will be able to load them up in Diablo 2 Resurrected.
Cederquist explained that the decision to support original Diablo 2 saves wasn’t planned from the beginning, but after trying it out the team was surprised to find the remaster could load them.
“Back when we were working on [the remaster], we wondered if the old save files would work and we kind of shoved it in and it worked,” he said. “And we were like, ‘okay, that’s the best feature ever’.”
Although it wasn’t explained whether this would only work for thePCversion of the game, Diablo 2 Resurrected will also support cross-progression across formats, so in theory players could import their 20-year-old save into the PC version then carry on playing it on console.
Blizzard Entertainmentannounced Diablo 2 Resurrectedfor PC and consoles last month during BlizzCon 2021.
The game will be released on PC,PlayStation 5,PlayStation 4,Xbox Series X/S,Xbox One, andNintendo Switch, will full cross-progression between formats.
The game features both classic and remastered visuals, which players can switch between on the fly. Blizzard said Diablo 2’s signature gameplay and systems are unchanged, “quirks and all”, but there have been quality of life improvements including a shared stash.
The remaster has been developed withVicarious Visions, the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 and Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy studio whichActivision Blizzard recently folded into Blizzard.
