A new six-part documentary series about the history of Xbox is coming next month.
Power On: The Story ofXboxwill be releasing on December 13 on a number of free streaming platforms including Roku, IMDv TV, YouTube and Redbox.

The series will cover the entire 20-year history of the consoles, and it appears it won’t be shy to discuss the low points too.

From the struggles the team had showing off the original Xbox, to its extremely large controller, to theXbox 360‘s infamous ‘red ring of death’ failures, the documentary’s trailer shows that it won’t be entirely positive.
Head of programming for Xbox, Tina Summerford, said: “The project began almost three years ago with a simple question: is there a compelling story behind the history of Xbox? The answer, it turns out, was yes, absolutely.

“So we partnered with an Emmy award-winning documentary film team to really dig in and help bring the story to life.
“At its core it’s a story about how Xbox started as a passion project from a small group of gamers withinMicrosoftand grew to become a source of joy for Xbox players around the world.”

The documentary trailer was shown as part of a special digital broadcast celebrating Xbox’s 20th anniversary.
In aGQ profilepublished to coincide with today’s anniversary, Microsoft’s head of gamingPhil Spencerreiterated thatThe Elder Scrolls 6 will be an Xbox console exclusivewhen it eventually releases, and said the company isencouraging him to think about a succession plan.

Sarah Bond, Microsoft’s head of gaming ecosystems, also revealed that the Xbox Game Pass project wasoriginally envisioned as a rental service for games.
