Square Enix is currently developing a Final Fantasy 9 remake, it’s been claimed.
In 2021, aFinal Fantasy 9 remakewas one of many unannounced titles listed in aGeForce Now database leak.

These included severalSquare Enixgames that would later be officially confirmed such as thePCversion ofFinal Fantasy 7 Remake, a Chrono Cross remaster andKingdom Hearts 4.
While a Final Fantasy 9 remake has yet to be announced,Giant Bombreporter Jeff Grubb claimed this week: “I will say I heard very recently, once again, Final Fantasy 9 remake is real, that is real and happening.”

Gematsusubsequently reported that a Final Fantasy 9 remake is currently in development too.
Final Fantasy 9 was originally released in 2000 for thePlayStation. It was directed by Hiroyuki Ito who would later direct Final Fantasy 12.

The game was re-released in 2010 as a PS1 Classic forPS3andPSP, withVitasupport arriving in 2012.
In 2016, the game was released for mobile and PC. It then came toPS4in 2017, and toXbox OneandNintendo Switchin 2019.

Earlier this week, a team of professional developers and artists released a 25-minute gameplay demo of Final Fantasy IX: Memoria Project, a proof of concept passion project designed to show what the game could look like with modern graphics.
Final Fantasy 16will bereleased for PlayStation 5 on June 22.
Square Enix is also currently working on the second entry in the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy.
In aFinal Fantasy 7 Rebirth updatelast week, producerYoshinori Kitasesaid: “Development is progressing smoothly and according to plan, We are currently working on nailing down a release date for the game.”

When Rebirth wasannounced in June 2022, Kitase said the game would be “released next winter”, meaning in late 2023 or early 2024.
